This series I started as a learning tool for my university students and has become very popular amongst collectors. The series includes carvings of spiritual themes combined with religious and mythical beings and symbols. All the works are carved on native Juniper. The wood grows at high altitudes and all the wood I use is gathered in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) Mountains by Jacob Duran and his two sons.
Each carving is greatly influenced by the richness of the Juniper's red and pale yellow grains. Each week Jacob and I get together and view the woods he has found. I then decide at what angle I want him to slab the pieces and many times leave it up to Jacob to surprise me. Every slab of Juniper reveals a different theme or variation of an exciting subject. The possibilities seem endless.
Although each work is different, I have developed a style which boast enough carving to exenterate the subject, while keeping the works simplistic enough to allow the grain of the woods to play a vital roll in the overall creation.
I will be posting works, their sizes, and prices as they arrive, As pieces sell, I will mark them as sold. Presently these works can be seen in Taos at Bryans Gallery and Inspirations, in Ranchos de Taos at Ranchos Mercantile, and here on the Web.
The series was launched with a one month show at Caffe Tazza in Taos and can be viewed here at the Gray Wolf Trading Co.Order on line at
