"Straight Up" is a Santa Fe based jazz group that Live in the Desert a CD by Straight Upmade its debut in March of 1994 at the Outpost Performance Space in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Our group started as a trio consisting of piano, bass, and drums, but soon added a female vocalist. Before the end of the year we expanded to a sextet, adding trumpet and woodwinds.

Collectively, some of our members have had tenure in the groups of jazz luminaries Chuck Wayne, Jimmy Knepper, and Stanley Turrentine.

 

"Straight Up" has appeared in all the major jazz concerts in the area including the "Jazz Under The Stars" series (New Mexico Jazz Workshop), and The "Santa Fe Jazz Awareness Festival". For the past three years we have been repeatedly been asked back to the above mentioned annual events. We are currently listed with the roster of the New Mexico Arts Division Directory.

Their diversity has given them a broad appeal. This is due in part because they are able to vary their musical presentation. It is also because they are able to perform as a trio, quartet, quintet, or sextet. This versatility allows this group to tailor themselves for their clients and listeners. Their performances not only include excellent musicianship of the groups’ members, but also the compositional and arranging talents of their founding member Robert Fox.
